What a race horse. Cloudy's Knight is at the top of his game at 9 years old. He has proven how good he is thru out his career. Today he was full of confidence and walked around the paddock as if he knew he was going to win. He is such a big horse(approx 17 hands tall) and yet he is so gentle(Shirley Schwart calls him her gentle giant) and loves all the attention that he gets.(he has his own massage therapist that travels around with him) In the post parade he was happy and bouncy. As always he loaded into the starting gate professionally and stood and waited for the gate to spring open. (The last 3 times I have ridden him he would break and let me place him wherever I wanted.) Today he was sharp and raring to go. He was on the bit from the break and wanted to goto the front. The pace was really slow(26 for the first 1/4) and with Cloudy's big stride it was just to slow for him so he kept pulling at me to let him go coming to the first turn. I had to keep a firm hold of him as not to move early, but he had his mind set to be in front at the wire the first time around. We ended up on the lead around the 1/16 pole and he remained there going around the second turn and down the backside. ( I was able to get him to relax and slow the pace down and let him catch his second wind) Coming to the 3 furlong pole Patrick Husbands on Eagle Poise moved up next to Cloudy and over took the lead. I didn't want to ask for another run from him yet, it was to early. I waited a few more strides and then asked Cloudy to start running. He was in tight, pinned to the rail by Eagle Poise but Cloudy fought back and over took the lead at the 1/16 pole and went on to win by a length. He has such heart and competitiveness and was determined to win. Jonathan Sheppard will forever get my praises for the tremendous job he has done conditioning Cloudy's Knight to go the distance and still have more in the tank galloping out after the race. There are no words to write that would give Jonathan Sheppard enough credit for the job that he has done and continues to do with all of his horses. I am very fortunate to get to ride for this Hall of Fame trainer. A true horseman to the business.
