RICHMOND, Va. — Rosemary Homeister Jr. got a cool reception when she arrived at Delaware Park after finishing as the second-leading jockey at Tampa Bay Downs.
"I went in and I had no business," she said Tuesday. No work? No worries.
She won her 2,138th and 2,139th career races on Monday night, moving her two victories past Patricia Cooksey on the career list. Homeister is now believed to trail only Hall of Famer Julie Krone in career victories among female jockeys, although Equibase, which tracks such statistics, has never broken down career wins by gender. Krone, who last raced in 2008, won 3,704 times, a mark that might well be safe. "I don't know if I want to ride for that much longer," Homeister said with a laugh. Not that long ago, the 37-year-old wasn't riding at all. She retired in 2004 to concentrate on selling real estate and starting a family, but got back into racing two years later after her marriage ended and she found that she missed the game. "Best decision I ever made," she said. Her 2,138th victory came aboard Gambles List in the third race at Colonial Downs, and she won again later in the night. With 45 winning rides in 192 starts, she is 16 wins ahead of Sheldon Russell in the jockey standings, and the meet has six more days and ends July 28. The best news for Homeister? She never had a chance to stress about the milestone. "I had my calculations incorrect. I thought I was like 11 wins away and when the gentleman from Colonial Downs came in last night, he said, 'Do you know you are tied right now?"' she said. "I thought I had a little ways to go. I'm kind of happy it was already there because any time you have to do a countdown, it just seems like it takes forever." Whether she stays in the game long enough to challenge Krone's mark, Homeister has other goals. She is one of just five females to ride in the Kentucky Derby - she finished 13th aboard Supah Blitz in 2003 - and said the top item on her list of goals also involves Churchill Downs. "To ride in the Kentucky Derby again," she said of her goal, "and win it."

Homeister packed up her tack and moved to Colonial Downs in Providence Forge, where she's turned her first visit to the track about 30 kilometres south of Richmond into a runaway, and might have made a little history, too.
