2010 Tampa Bay Downs Breeders Cup $150,000 Stake. Going into this race I had watched 4 replays of Karelian's previous races. I wanted to get an idea of how he ran and what it would take to be Gio Ponti. Rusty Arnold gave me very simple instructions in the paddock. He said "this is a very classy and easy horse to ride. Just let him place himself and get comfortable and he will take you home." What a brilliant and confident horse. He broke sharp and went right to the front. He relaxed immediately and let me dictate the pace. I started to pick him up gradually coming to the 3/8 pole knowing that Gio Ponti would pounce at any time. I wanted to get a jump on him so that he really had to work hard to catch us. Well it worked if only by a head bob and winning by a nose. Karelian showed his willingness and determination to win. It was a stretch dual that made history. What an amazing race!
